Bruce Lee’s Oakland school was first started in 1963 with James Lee as Bruce’s assistant instructor. While the school was initially a commerial prospect, it soon moved to James Lee’s garage due to lack of business. The workouts there were compared to a Marine bootcamp that often left holes in the garage walls from missed blows during sparring sessions.

Students from this era include: Leo Fong, Howard Williams, George Lee, Allen Joe, David Cox, Felix Macias, Gary Canaagen, Bob Baker and Al Novak. Gary Dill did not arrive at the Oakland school until 1971 and never met Bruce Lee. He was a brief student of James Lee. James passed on January 2nd, 1972.
